People tend to think themselves to be too simple without being conscious of that. Hell, a lot of people feel such a need for that.
Some people are convinced they know who they are, others say they do not know who they are, what their true self is.
The notion of a "true self" has gotten senseless. You can't not be anything but your own self.
Even if you're someone who tends to pretend to be someone else by way of imitation then that's still who they are.
Not being a highly consistent person also doesn't not make you yourself. You just aren't a one-track minded person then.
If you don't know who you are then maybe you think yourself to be smaller than you really are.
Maybe you're looking for a few defining droplets in a whole ocean of who you are that you do not even see.
You don't need to be able to sum yourself in a few sentences from the top of your head to convince yourself and others that you know who you are.
Don't bullshit yourself and let nobody else bullshit you about that.
If you feel you don't know who you are, you still *are* and you are nothing and nobody but yourself nonetheless.
It just means there is opportunity and need for self-discovery and the lack of a more or less narrow self-definition means you can have an easier time adapting to whatever comes your way. Not comparing yourself to others also helps.
Some people just feel they know who they are and walk through life cocksure of a one dimensional reality while others have to journey inward first to make sense of themselves and might go through a while array of selves before they know where they wanna go in life.
Having to do that can suck the life out of you, but it's better to embrace it because despair won't get you anywhere but down.
And if you're brave you can just accept that there might not be a thing such as "one true self" and that you might be quite different person every day or week or month with a more or less consistent baseline of a self.
People change, it happens, and it fucking should. Everything changes and people who think they don't need to adapt to anything more than often are a pain in the ass.

Human life is all about discovering and experiencing - and all of these alter us in one way or the other. We cannot say, until the day we die, and sometimes not even then, that we found or know our true self. We only have one core that we can stay true to, but aside from that, everything can change.
